In partnership with the GTHA Community Housing Collaborative, the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis has released its report detailing the social and economic impacts of public housing in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Building more social housing could give the economy a $50-billion boost, the report says.
According to researchers, adding 20,000 more homes and renewing existing housing stock would also add nearly 15,000 jobs by 2050.
The GDP impact is nearly double that of leaving investment at current levels, according to the report.
While this report is based on housing and societal impacts in the GTHA, it serves as evidence that a combined pathway of renewal of existing and construction of new housing units will have a significant impact on the overall economic health and well-being of the community as a whole.
And when economic outcomes improve, so, too, do physical and mental health outcomes.
